Sometimes Failure Is What We Need

Sometimes in life we try to reach a goal and things don’t go as we hoped and planned. It happens because life is a gamble. Life isn’t fair and there are no guarantees. There is a always a 50/50 chance of either success or failure.

I have seen people crushed by their failures, never to try at it again. They basically gave up on their dream and any hopes related to that dream. But than I’ve seen others where failing lit a fire inside of them and they became better than they were because of it. The legendary boxer Larry Holmes is a great example of this.

Legend has it that when Larry Holmes was an amateur trying out for the Olympics, he was so afraid of his opponent Duane Bobick, that he got disqualified in their match for excessive holding. It was rumored that he also crawled out of the ring in fear like a dog with his tail between his legs. He was branded as a “coward” by the boxing community after that.  This devastating failure could have crushed Larry and he could have quit right then and there on his hopes of becoming a pro boxer and champion like so many would have. But Larry was something different.

The reputation as a coward lit a fire under his ass and he started training like a madman possessed. The pain and humiliation was something he never wanted to ever feel again.

Now we all know what happened to Larry Holmes. He went on to become one of the greatest Heavyweight champions of all time, beating Ali and having the 3rd longest title reign of 7 years in Heavyweight boxing history. So failure is what he needed. Meanwhile, who is Duane Bobick?

So although life is a 50/50 gamble, it’s worth it to take your chance at it. It’s better than the alternative. Failure doesn’t have to stop you in your tracks.  Life isn’t over because of a temporary setback. Get up and dust yourself off.

So are you going to be the kind of person who let’s failure crush you? Or are you going to let failure wake up the sleeping giant inside of you? Your choice.
